About Brown & Patterson
Brown & Patterson LLP was formed in late 2024, but Attorney Mike Brown and Attorney Adele Patterson have been working together on cutting-edge and complex criminal defense matters for many years.
Mike and Adele first got to know each other shortly after the United States Supreme Court issued the decision in Miller v. Alabama, 567 US 460 (2012), which holds that it is unconstitutional to impose a mandatory sentence of life without parole on a person for a crime committed as a juvenile. In 2015, Adele obtained a decision from the Connecticut Supreme Court that made it illegal in the state to ever impose a sentence of life without parole on a juvenile offender (State v. Riley, 315 Conn. 637 (2015)). Mike was one of the lawyers leading the work to bring home people who were locked up as children and previously had no hope of getting out in time to build a meaningful life.
Their professional relationship began by collaborating on fully implementing the new juvenile release and sentencing opportunities — telling peoples’ stories, changing the law, and changing the way those in power think about our clients. Through this work, Mike and Adele discovered the synergy that exists between them when tackling complicated and novel legal issues. As a result of their efforts, there are dozens of individuals who were sentenced to effective life sentences as children who have now been released early, back to their families and their communities.
